Walkway Installation in New Jersey. Paver & Stone Paths
The path from the street to your front door is the first thing visitors walk. The path from your back door to the patio is what you use every day. Both are worth building correctly proper base depth, materials that hold up through NJ winters, and a design that looks intentional rather than like something that was figured out last. Red Maple Landscapes provides walkway installation and entrance systems throughout Somerset and Union County.

Walkways fail for the same reason patios fail: inadequate base preparation. A walkway installed over 3–4 inches of loosely compacted gravel on clay soil will start rocking and settling within a couple of seasons as the clay shifts with the freeze thaw cycle. The fix is to build the base correctly the first time, proper excavation depth, compacted aggregate base, and appropriate edge restraint to hold the perimeter.
We also design walkways for the specific site: the grade from the street to the door, the drainage direction, the relationship to existing planting beds and lawn areas. A walkway that looks good on paper but creates a trip hazard on a sloped entry, or that channels runoff toward the house, isn’t actually designed, it’s just placed. We think through the layout before the first shovel hits the ground.
Front Entry Walkways

The entry walkway sets the tone for the whole property. We design and install entry paths in concrete pavers and natural stone that connect the street, driveway, or sidewalk to the front door. Width matters, a 4 foot wide entry feels generous and welcoming; a 2.5 foot wide path feels narrow and afterthought-like. We recommend widths and materials during the consultation based on the home’s scale and the entry grade.
Entrance Steps & Stoops

When the entry involves a grade change, stairs from the street level to the door, or a step up from the walkway to the landing. we build those as part of the walkway system. Paver and natural stone steps require proper riser height and tread depth for comfortable, safe use. Entry steps built too steep or at irregular heights are both uncomfortable and a liability. We build to code and to practical common sense.
Garden & Pathway Systems

Connecting a back patio to a garden area, a side yard access path, or a stepping stone trail through a planted area, these walkways prioritize navigability and natural integration with the landscape. We use a range of materials depending on the context: flagstone steppers set in mulch or ground cover for a naturalistic path, concrete paver systems for a more formal connection, or a combination for a layered design.

What’s the best width for a front entry walkway?
For most Central NJ homes, a 4 foot wide entry walkway is the practical minimum for comfortable two person side by side entry. A 5 foot width feels generous and welcoming. Narrower walkways 2.5–3 feet, are functional but feel cramped on properties where the overall scale warrants more. We discuss width during the consultation relative to your specific entry configuration and home scale.
Can a walkway be installed in cold weather in NJ?
Base work should not be done on frozen ground, frozen soil doesn’t compact properly and can create voids when it thaws. Paver installation itself can proceed in temperatures down to about 35°F, but we don’t install in freezing or wet conditions that compromise base compaction or joint sand curing. Our spring and fall scheduling accommodates these windows.
How long does walkway installation take?
A standard residential front entry walkway typically takes 1–2 days of installation time, depending on length, any step work involved, and site conditions. Larger walkway systems or those involving significant excavation or tree root management take longer. We provide a specific timeline in the written proposal.
What’s the difference between a walkway and a sidewalk?
In residential use, the terms are often used interchangeably. A public sidewalk is maintained by the municipality; a private walkway on your property is yours. When we talk about walkway installation, we mean the path on private residential property, entry paths, garden paths, connections between features. Municipal sidewalk work has different permit requirements.
Can you match my new walkway to my existing patio?
Yes, and material continuity between a walkway and an existing patio is something we plan for. If the patio uses a specific Belgard or EP Henry paver, we can typically source the same product for the walkway. For older patios where the exact product may be discontinued, we discuss complementary options during the consultation. Matching patterns and joint lines between a new walkway and an existing patio requires careful planning from the outset.
Do I need a permit for a walkway in NJ?
Most at grade private walkway installations in NJ don’t require a permit. Entry stoops, steps with significant grade change, and walkways attached to structures may have different requirements depending on the municipality. We research permit requirements for your specific town as part of the project planning process.
