Landscaping is the ongoing side of outdoor property care, the mowing schedule that keeps turf healthy, the spring mulching that suppresses weeds and regulates soil temperature, the fall cleanup that protects the lawn and planting beds through winter, the new sod installation that replaces a damaged or worn patch of lawn. It’s also the part of property maintenance that most homeowners either don’t have time for or find themselves doing inconsistently. One skipped mowing becomes two. The mulch that wasn’t replaced last spring becomes weed pressure all summer. The leaves that weren’t cleared in fall mat down and kill the grass underneath. These aren’t dramatic failures, they’re the slow accumulation of small neglects that eventually require expensive corrections.
Red Maple Landscapes handles residential and commercial landscaping throughout Somerset and Union County. We build client relationships based on reliable scheduling and honest communication, not one-time transactions. When we’re your landscaping company, your property looks right all season, not just right after we leave.
OUR LANDSCAPING SERVICES
Lawn Care & Maintenance

Weekly or bi-weekly mowing, edging along beds and hardscape, string-trimming around obstacles, and blowing clippings clear of paved surfaces. We mow at the right height for NJ turf conditions, typically 3–3.5 inches, which promotes deep root development and natural weed resistance. Scalping a lawn might look neat for a day, but it weakens the grass and invites problems. See full Lawn Care page →
Fertilization & Weed Control

A properly timed fertilization program builds dense, green turf that outcompetes weeds without over application. We use a phased program calibrated to New Jersey’s growing seasons, early spring, late spring, summer, and fall, that feeds the grass when it can actually use nutrients and doesn’t push excessive top growth in summer heat.
Lawn Aeration & Overseeding

Core aeration pulls plugs of compacted soil and thatch, opening the lawn to water, oxygen, and nutrient absorption. Combined with overseeding using a quality tall fescue or bluegrass blend appropriate to NJ’s climate, aeration performed in late summer or early fall is one of the most effective long-term investments in lawn health you can make.
Mulching & Garden Bed Maintenance

Fresh mulch applied 2–3 inches deep suppresses weed germination, regulates soil moisture, moderates temperature around plant roots, and improves the overall appearance of planting beds. We apply mulch in spring and fall and can clean out beds, removing dead growth, reshaping edges, and replacing old compacted mulch, before applying fresh material. See Mulching & Planting →
Sod Installation

When a lawn is too damaged, thin, or compacted to recover through seeding, sod installation replaces it immediately with established turf. We prepare the soil properly before laying sod, grading, amending if needed, and watering in, so the new lawn roots down within a few weeks rather than failing at the edges. See Sod Installation →
Spring & Fall Cleanup

Spring cleanup clears winter debris, cuts back ornamental grasses, edge-defines beds, and prepares the property for the growing season. Fall cleanup removes leaves before they mat down, cuts back perennials, and protects planting beds with a final mulch layer before frost. Both cleanups are scheduled based on the actual season, not a calendar date, so the timing matches what your property actually needs. See Seasonal Cleanup →
Annual Flower Planting

We install seasonal annual plantings in beds, containers, and entrance features throughout the growing season. Spring installations typically include pansies, snapdragons, and geraniums. Summer rotations bring in petunias, marigolds, and impatiens. We select varieties appropriate to each bed’s sun exposure and soil conditions, not just what’s available at the nursery that week.
Commercial Landscaping & Property Maintenance

Fresh mulch applied 2–3 inches deep suppresses weed germination, regulates soil moisture, moderates temperature around plant roots, and improves the overall appearance of planting beds. We apply mulch in spring and fall and can clean out beds, removing dead growth, reshaping edges, and replacing old compacted mulch, before applying fresh material. See Mulching & Planting →
WHY CHOOSE RED MAPLE FOR LANDSCAPING IN NJ
Reliable scheduling. We show up when we say we will. For lawn care clients, that means a consistent service day each week not a different day every week depending on who’s available. When weather causes a delay, we communicate it and make it up.
Right-sized services. We don’t push clients into service packages they don’t need. If your lawn needs mowing and cleanup but not a full fertilization program, we’ll tell you that. If a problem we see in your lawn warrants attention, we’ll raise it, but we won’t manufacture problems to generate more work.
Local knowledge. We’ve worked in North Plainfield, Scotch Plains, Bridgewater, Watchung, and the surrounding area long enough to know the soil conditions, the common pest pressures, the drainage patterns, and the turf challenges that are specific to Central NJ. That experience shows in how we handle problems before they escalate.
HOW LANDSCAPING SERVICES WORK WITH RED MAPLE
Free Estimate Visit
We visit your property, assess the lawn and planting areas, and discuss what you’re trying to achieve, whether that’s a consistent maintenance schedule, a specific project like mulching or sod, or a full-season program. The estimate is written and itemized so you know exactly what you’re getting and what it costs.
Service Agreement
For recurring services like lawn care, we work on a season based schedule with clear start and end dates. For one-time projects like cleanup, mulching, or sod, we schedule and complete the work on a date that works for your calendar.
Ongoing Service
Recurring clients receive consistent service on their scheduled day. You’ll hear from us when weather causes adjustments, and you’ll have a direct line to the team, not a call center, if something comes up.
How often should a NJ lawn be mowed in season?
For most New Jersey lawns, weekly mowing from mid-April through October keeps turf at a healthy height without ever removing more than one third of the blade in a single cut. In summer heat when growth slows, bi-weekly mowing may be appropriate. We assess each lawn individually rather than applying a rigid schedule regardless of conditions.
When is the best time to fertilize a lawn in New Jersey?
The most effective fertilization windows for NJ lawns are early spring (late March–early April, as the grass comes out of dormancy), late spring (May–June), late summer (August, if needed), and fall (September–October, which is the most important application for NJ cool-season turf). Avoid heavy nitrogen application in July and August, when heat stress makes fertilizer more likely to burn than benefit.
What type of grass grows best in Central New Jersey?
Central NJ falls in the cool-season grass zone. Tall fescue is the most widely recommended turf type for NJ lawns, it’s drought-tolerant, adapts to partial shade, and holds up well in clay soils. Kentucky bluegrass and fine fescue blends are also used. We select seed mixes based on the sun exposure, soil type, and use patterns specific to your lawn.
What’s the difference between seeding and sod installation?
Seeding establishes new turf from seed, lower material cost but takes 4–8 weeks before the lawn is usable and requires careful watering during establishment. Sod provides immediately established turf, higher material cost but usable within 2–3 weeks and lower failure risk when soil is properly prepared. For larger bare or damaged areas, sod is often more reliable. We discuss both options during your consultation and recommend based on your specific conditions and timeline.
Do you offer commercial landscaping contracts?
Yes. We maintain commercial properties throughout Somerset and Union County under seasonal contracts. Services include weekly mowing, seasonal cleanups, mulching, and annual planting programs. Commercial clients receive a written service schedule and a dedicated point of contact.
When should I schedule spring cleanup in New Jersey?
The right time for spring cleanup in NJ is when temperatures have consistently stayed above freezing typically late March through mid-April. Too early, and the ground is still too soft to work without damage. Too late, and spring growth is already underway, which makes cleanup harder and more disruptive. We schedule spring cleanups based on actual weather conditions each year rather than a fixed date.
