⭐ 4.9-Star Google Rating · 200+ Projects Completed · Licensed NJ Home Improvement Contractor · Locally Owned, North Plainfield NJ
Hardscaping covers everything built with hard materials, concrete pavers, natural stone, block, concrete that structures the outdoor areas of your property. A well executed hardscape project adds usable space to your home, solves drainage and erosion problems, and increases property value in ways a lawn alone never can.
What separates a hardscape project that holds up for twenty years from one that fails after two winters isn’t the look — it’s what’s underneath. The base preparation, the drainage planning, the footing depth on a retaining wall, the compaction of the aggregate base under a patio. These are the things you can’t see when the job is done, but they’re the only things that matter once the first hard freeze hits.
Red Maple Landscapes has been building hardscape in Central New Jersey since 2018. We work in Somerset and Union County, where clay-heavy soils, freeze-thaw cycles, and water table conditions make base preparation non-negotiable. Every project we build, we build for the conditions that actually exist on your property not for ideal conditions on a spec sheet.
OUR HARDSCAPING SERVICES
Paver Patio Design & Installation

We design and build paver patios using concrete pavers, natural bluestone, granite, and porcelain matched to your property, your aesthetic, and your budget. The work begins with properly excavated and graded substrate, compacted aggregate base, and edging systems that hold the installation in place over time. We also integrate outdoor kitchens, fire pits, pergola footings, and seating walls as part of the patio design rather than as afterthoughts added later. See our Patio Design page →
Retaining Wall Construction

We build retaining walls in segmental concrete block, natural fieldstone, bluestone, and poured concrete, depending on what the site requires structurally and what fits the landscape aesthetically. Every wall we build includes drainage aggregate backfill and, where needed, perforated drain tile. No wall we’ve built has failed due to hydrostatic pressure, and that’s not by accident. See our Retaining Walls page →
Drainage Solutions & Grading

Standing water, soft spots, water running toward the foundation, these are structural landscape problems, not cosmetic ones. We design and install French drains, channel drains, dry creek beds, and catch basin systems, combined with proper grading that directs water away from structures and low areas. If your yard has drainage issues, they need to be solved before any new hardscape goes in. See Drainage Solutions →
Walkways, Steps & Entrance Features

A well-designed walkway connects your home to the street, the patio to the back door, and the driveway to the entrance, in a way that looks intentional and holds up under foot traffic and weather. We build front entrance steps in natural stone and paver systems, pathway systems through landscape beds, and landing areas that transition correctly between grade changes. See Walkway Installation →
Outdoor Living Spaces

When a project grows beyond a patio into a complete outdoor room — kitchen, bar, fire feature, covered structure, integrated lighting, we design and build the whole thing as a single cohesive project. This approach eliminates the structural and aesthetic problems that come from adding elements to an existing patio that wasn’t built for them. See Outdoor Living Spaces →
Grading & Regrading

Every hardscaping project starts with the grade. If the land doesn’t slope away from structures correctly or if it creates low points where water collects, the hardscape installed on top of it will eventually fail. We handle the excavation and grading work that makes the rest of the project possible. See Grading & Regrading →
Fence Installation

We install wood privacy fences, vinyl fencing, aluminum ornamental fencing, and post-and-rail systems for residential and commercial properties. Fence installation is coordinated with other hardscape work — particularly important when a fence runs along a retaining wall or patio perimeter. See Fence Installation →
WHY HARDSCAPE QUALITY MATTERS IN NEW JERSEY
New Jersey’s climate imposes specific demands on anything built outdoors. The freeze-thaw cycle, where temperatures drop below 32°F and then rise above it repeatedly throughout the winter causes water that has infiltrated a hardscape base to expand and contract. When a base is improperly compacted or lacks drainage, this repeated expansion pushes pavers out of level, cracks concrete, and topples retaining walls.
Somerset and Union County soils lean clay-heavy in many areas. Clay doesn’t drain well. It expands when wet and contracts when dry. A patio built directly over clay soil without a proper aggregate base, typically 6–8 inches of compacted crushed stone, will settle unevenly within a few years regardless of the quality of the pavers on top.
This is why shortcuts in base preparation are never worth the cost savings. We’ve rebuilt plenty of patios that were installed cheaply and failed within three seasons. The second installation always costs more than getting it right the first time.

HOW OUR HARDSCAPING PROCESS WORKS
Step 1. Free On-Site Consultation
We come to your property, walk the space with you, look at the site conditions that affect the design grade, drainage, soil, sun exposure, access and talk through what you want to accomplish. This visit is free and there’s no obligation. We listen before we recommend.
Step 2. Written Proposal
Within a few days of the consultation, we send a detailed written proposal: materials specified by name and manufacturer, dimensions, phasing if relevant, and a complete cost breakdown. Nothing is vague. If something isn’t clear, we explain it before you decide.
Step 3. Permits & Scheduling
Once you approve the project, we apply for any required permits and schedule your installation. We give you a project start date and an estimated completion window. Projects rarely run longer than we estimate, if something unexpected comes up, we tell you right away.
Step 4. Installation
Our crew handles excavation, base preparation, installation, and final grading. We maintain a clean work site and protect existing landscaping and structures. Materials are specified-grade, no substitutions without discussion.
Step 5. Final Walkthrough
When the project is complete, we walk through it with you. If anything doesn’t meet the standard we described or that you expected, we address it before we consider the job finished. We don’t close a job until you’re satisfied.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS- HARDSCAPING IN NJ
What is hardscaping, and how is it different from landscaping?
Hardscaping refers to the built, non-living elements of an outdoor space, patios, retaining walls, walkways, steps, drainage systems, and structures. Landscaping covers the living elements: grass, plants, trees, and beds. A complete outdoor project typically involves both, and we handle the hardscape side. For lawn care and planting services, see our Landscaping Services page.
How long does a typical hardscaping project take in NJ?
Most residential patio and retaining wall projects take 3–7 days of installation time. More complex outdoor living space projects with multiple elements kitchen, pergola, patio, walls , typically run 10–21 days. We give you a project schedule before we begin so you know exactly what to expect.
Do I need a permit for hardscaping in New Jersey?
It depends on the project and your municipality. Many NJ towns require permits for patios above a certain square footage, retaining walls above 4 feet, and any structural feature attached to the home. We research and obtain all required permits for your project as part of our process, and permit costs are included in your written estimate.
What hardscaping materials do you work with?
We work with concrete pavers (Belgard, Techo-Bloc, EP Henry), natural bluestone, granite, Pennsylvania fieldstone, porcelain pavers, concrete masonry block (Belgard, Allan Block), and poured concrete. During your consultation, we walk through material options and explain the trade-offs between cost, durability, appearance, and maintenance for your specific project.
How do I maintain hardscaping in New Jersey winters?
Paver and stone surfaces should be sealed every 2–3 years to protect against freeze-thaw damage and staining. Avoid rock salt on pavers, use sand or calcium chloride instead. Inspect retaining walls each spring for any movement or drainage issues, and address minor shifts before they become major failures. Properly installed hardscape requires minimal maintenance.
Can you combine hardscaping and landscaping in one project?
Yes. Many of our projects combine hardscape construction with planting, mulching, and sod work. We coordinate both phases so the planting complements the hardscape design, and we don’t leave a finished patio surrounded by torn-up ground.
How do I know if my yard needs drainage work before starting hardscaping?
Signs your yard has drainage issues include standing water after rainfall, soft or soggy areas in the lawn, water flowing toward the foundation, and erosion channels in the soil. If any of these apply, we’ll assess the drainage situation during your consultation and include a drainage solution in the project design. Installing hardscape over unresolved drainage problems shortens the life of the installation significantly.
Are you able to work with homeowners who already have design plans?
Yes. If you’ve worked with a landscape architect or designer and have plans you want us to execute, we’re happy to review those and price them for construction. We can also identify any constructability issues in the plans before the project begins.
