SPRING CLEANUP SERVICES
Spring cleanup in Central NJ happens when the ground has thawed and temperatures have stabilized above freezingtypically late March through April. It’s a one-time investment that determines how clean and healthy your property looks for the entire growing season.
What Spring Cleanup Includes
- Leaf and debris removal: Winter debris, matted leaves, and branch fall from storms are removed from lawn areas, planting beds, and hardscape surfaces.
- Ornamental grass cutback: Ornamental grasses are cut back in early spring before new growth emerges. Left uncut, they become fire hazards and interfere with new growth. We cut them at the correct height based on the variety.
- Perennial and shrub cleanup: Dead stems from last year’s perennials are cut back. Shrubs are inspected for winter damage and deadwood is removed.
- Bed edging: Planting bed edges are re-cut to restore definition between beds and lawn areas.
- Lawn assessment: We check the lawn for bare patches, winterkill, disease from leaf matting, and snow mold, and advise on any remedial action needed.
- Mulching (optional add-on): Spring cleanup pairs naturally with mulch installation. Many clients schedule cleanup and mulching as a combined service.
FALL CLEANUP SERVICES
Fall cleanup timing in Central NJ is important. Too early and you’re fighting falling leaves as soon as you clear them. Too late and leaves have matted down long enough to start killing the grass underneath. The right time is when the majority of leaves have fallen, typically late October through mid-November in our area, so we can clear once and have it count.
What Fall Cleanup Includes
- Leaf removal: Complete clearing of leaves from lawn areas, beds, and hardscape surfaces. We don’t blow leaves into the street — we remove them from the property. Leaves left on lawns over winter mat down, block sunlight and air circulation, and kill the grass beneath them.
- Lawn final mowing & edging: The final mowing of the season at a slightly lower height than summer to reduce snow mold risk through winter.
- Perennial and annual cutback: Spent annuals are pulled and disposed of. Most perennials are cut back in fall, though some are left for winter interest and wildlife value — we discuss preferences with each client.
- Bed protection: An optional final light mulch layer over planting beds protects root systems through the freeze-thaw cycle of NJ winter.
- Hardscape clearing: Leaves cleared from patio surfaces, walkways, and around retaining walls to prevent decomposing organic matter from staining stone and pavers.
WHY SKIP-YEAR LEAF REMOVAL CAUSES REAL LAWN DAMAGE
A single season of leaves left on a NJ lawn through winter can cause significant turf damage. When leaves mat, especially large maple and oak leaves, they create an airtight, lightless layer over the grass that kills it. The dead areas don’t recover on their own; they require overseeding or sod replacement in spring.
That cost is always higher than what fall cleanup would have been. We say this not to sell more cleanups but because we see the results every spring, dead patches that homeowners blame on the winter when it was the leaves that did the damage.
HOW TO SCHEDULE SEASONAL CLEANUP
Spring cleanup slots book out in February and March. If you wait until April to call about spring cleanup, we may not be able to accommodate you until late April or May. Fall cleanup scheduling typically fills in September for October–November execution.
We recommend booking both spring and fall cleanup at the beginning of the year if you’re a regular client. Existing clients get scheduling priority and most of our cleanup clients schedule both seasons together in a single call each January.
When should I schedule spring cleanup in Central NJ?
The right time for spring cleanup in Somerset and Union County is typically late March through mid-April, once the ground has thawed and nighttime temperatures are consistently above freezing. Working in the yard too early in wet conditions damages soil structure — particularly on clay-heavy NJ soils. We schedule cleanups based on actual conditions rather than a fixed date.
Do you remove the leaves from the property or just blow them to the curb?
We remove leaves from the property. Blowing debris to the curb creates problems with storm drain blockage and typically leaves organic material on the hardscape and at the lawn edge that decomposes and encourages weed germination. We bag and haul away all debris or use a truck-mounted vacuum loader for large leaf volumes.
Should I cut back ornamental grasses in fall or spring?
The standard recommendation for most ornamental grasses in NJ is to cut back in early spring, not fall. The spent foliage provides winter habitat value for beneficial insects and offers some protection to the crown through freeze-thaw cycles. We cut ornamental grasses in spring cleanup, before new growth emerges, which makes the work cleaner and less damaging.
How many times do you typically need to do leaf cleanup in fall?
For most properties with heavy tree coverage, one comprehensive late-season cleanup, when most leaves have fallen, is the most efficient approach. For properties with an oak tree, note that oaks drop their leaves later than maples and other species, often in November. We schedule accordingly. If a second pass is warranted before winter, we’ll tell you during the cleanup visit.
Is fall cleanup included in a regular lawn care contract?
For regular lawn care clients, fall cleanup is typically scheduled as a separate service at the end of the season, the scope goes beyond standard mowing visits and is priced accordingly. Spring cleanup is similarly separate from the regular mowing schedule. We’re clear about what each service includes so there are no surprises about what’s covered.
